Mt. Baldy Feb 2011

On February 5, 2011, friend Greg, son-in-law Casey and I made a snow ascent of Mt. Baldy. It wasn't too tough. I finally broke down and bought a pair of hiking boots rather than rely upon my running shoes. I bought a pair of Vasque; since I have only had good luck with Vasque running shoes I thought I'd take the plunge. Boy, was I sorry. Bad blisters. I don't have any luck with the hiking boots.

We foolishly hauled snowshoes up, not needing them, and failed to bring our ice axes which we left in the car. The surface was icy. Casey and I used Yak Trax (cables that string around the shoe), which barely did the trick. Just about everybody else going up and honest-to-goodness crampons and ice axes. We were unable to make some more vertical ascents because we didn't have our gear with us. Coming down the snow got slushy and we could have used the snowshoes we were carrying but we gutted ahead with boot glissades.

The temps were pretty cold at the top and the wind furious. Baldy is southern California's third highest peak.
